An opportunity has opened for an ophthalmic assistant / ophthalmic technician / orthoptist to join us in delivery high-quality eye care to our patients.


Whitsunday Eye Surgery is a well-known ophthalmic practice in beautiful Mackay, Queensland, with a strong reputation in cataract and oculoplastic surgery. We pride ourselves in paying personal attention to our patients and offering the highest quality of ophthalmic care. We are also heavily involved in training future eye surgeons and educating medical students.


The position is part-time at four full days a week.


The duties include:

  • First-line clinical assessment of patients

  • Measurement of visual acuity and intraocular pressure

  • Operate ophthalmic diagnostic equipment such as ocular coherence tomography, OCT-angiogram, biometer (IOLMaster700 and EyeStar), wavefront aberrometer, corneal topography and visual field analyser

  • Arrange surgical bookings

  • Assist in minor surgical procedures - setting up sterile fields and deliver of sterile instruments

  • Administration and reception duties from time to time


Characteristics required:

  • Reliable, punctual, adaptable

  • Able to work well as in a team

  • Hard-working and self-motivated

Experience/qualification:

  • Experience as an orthoptist or ophthalmic technician/assistant will be highly desirable

  • Experience as optical dispenser or optometry assistant will be welcome

  • Allied health professional (eg. nurse) or biomedical scientist with interest in eye care will be welcome
